Even though Jesus was God’s Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered.  In this way, God qualified Him as a perfect High Priest, and He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him.  Hebrews 5:8-9 New Living Translation

Have you ever heard that if you don’t do this or that or if you sin that you can lose your salvation?  I have.  I have heard some incredible (incredible meaning not credible) teaching on things like, “You don’t know which sin will cause you to lose your salvation so be watchful of your sins.  So you know what people did?  They starting “watching their sins.”  They took their eyes off of the salvation that Jesus bled and died for and since sin was being preached in the majority of churches all across America, you had a majority group of Christians who were more aware of sin than the Blood of Jesus that was shed to wash away their sins.  Oh but times have changed and are continuing to change.

Today because of the preaching of the Gospel, the real Gospel, believers everywhere are being delivered and set free from a “sin consciousness” and are coming into righteousness consciousness.  They now know that they are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.  What does this mean?  It means that people are realizing that it’s not about what they’ve done or have not done but about what Jesus has done.  Because Jesus never sinned, because Jesus was completely obedient to all of God’s laws and the requirements of those laws all of His righteousness and all of His obedience gets credited to US.  Let’s look at our opening text.

Even though Jesus was God’s Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered. In this way, God qualified Him as a perfect High Priest, and He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him. Hebrews 5:8-9 New Living Translation

This scripture clearly details and shows us Jesus learned obedience through the things  He suffered.  You see Jesus did not know anything about being obedient to His Father before He came here in an earthly body.  There is something that is higher than obedience and that is called AGREEMENT!!!  Can’t you see it? While Jesus was in Heaven He never had a thought about doing anything that the Father and The Holy Spirit did not desire to do because they were in complete agreement.  Obedience was something He had to learn because all He ever knew was agreement.  And since He had free will in a human body, He was able to be tempted and then learned what it meant to be obedient.  Obedience always involves choice.  While Jesus was in Heaven with the Father there was no choice, only agreement.  But here on Earth, The Word says He was tempted in all ways as we were yet without sin.

And since He did not yield to sin and selfish desires but obeyed the Father fully and He was the only One and still is the only One who can obey the Father fully, God qualified Him as a perfect High Priest.  And when God the Father qualified Him as a perfect High Priest He then became THE SOURCE of ETERNAL SALVATION for all those who obey Him.

Now someone will say, “See you must be obedient to Jesus!”  Really?  Lets take a look at the word obey there. The word obey there in the greek means hupakouo and it means to listen, hearken to, obey and answer.  In this case the emphasis is on answering.  To obey Jesus in that verse means and has the connotation  of one who on a knock at the door comes to listen to who it is (the duty of the porter), and to answer the knock.  So in essence the person who hears the message of the Gospel and accepts Jesus as Lord has obeyed His call.  That is what it means in that verse to obey Jesus.  This is called the obedience of faith that is stated in Romans 16:26.  Now someone will say, “Well there is still work or works to be done to be saved and keep your salvation!!!”  Again, REALLY?   Let’s see what Jesus Himself said when someone else asked Him about works.

Then said they unto Him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent.  John 6:28-29 King James Version

The New Living Translation makes it even clearer.

Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the One He has sent.” John 6:29 New Living Translation

Your work is to believe!!!  When you believe you will do.  Right believing leads to right living and not the other way around.  So please understand and stand under what Jesus’s obedience has accomplished for you: ETERNAL SALVATION!!!  I did not say that.  Hebrews 5:9 did.  Believe it!!!

All the “blessed” to you!!! Shalom
